Heyyyyy Gurl, Hey!
It’s time for some girl chat! As you’ll know from my previous post that I am chatting about black designers that are presenting at NYFW!
Today, I will be chatting about Korto Momolu.
Korto Momolu which is pronounced as Cort.toe- Mo.Mo.Lu, She is from Liberia, Africa and many of her designs are inspired by her African roots.
Korto Momolu graduated from a fashion school based out of Canada in 1990. In 2006, she launched her self entitled clothing line. In 2008, she auditioned and was selected for the 5th season of Project Runway. She was voted as the “fan favorite” as well the 1st runner up at the end of the competition.
Since Project Runway, she has collaborated with Dillards and created an accessory line. She has created an eco-friendly accessory line for the Smithsonian Museum and worked with other companies.
She was highlighted as one of the top 5 designers to watch out for at her debut show for Spring/Summer09 NYFW. Fast forward to SS 2020 and she has the media in a frenzy because of a never before seen show. Momolu and women grow collaborated and brought cannabis to the runway. Women grow is an organization that main focus is to connect, educate, empower, and inspire women about the cannabis industry. Chanda Macias is the CEO of Women Grow. This night was epic for the two black women that are making history in fashion and cannabis.
I can go on and on but check out some of the looks from that night.
